The Third Man (1949)
In the shattered landscape of postwar Vienna, Holly Martins, a down-on-his-luck author of dime-store Westerns, arrives seeking refuge with his old friend, Harry Lime, only to find him dead. Suspicion ignites when Martins uncovers whispers of a mysterious "third man" at the scene of Lime's demise, plunging him into a labyrinth of intrigue. His amateur investigation draws the unwelcome attention of Major Calloway, a hardened British officer, while his resolve crumbles further as he becomes captivated by Anna, Lime's devastated lover, blurring the lines between loyalty and obsession. The deeper he digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes, threatening to consume him entirely.
