My Old Lady (2014)

Mathias Gold, a New Yorker besieged by misfortune, unexpectedly inherits a Parisian apartment from his late father. Arriving in France with visions of a quick sale, he is confronted with an unforeseen complication: a long-term tenant unwilling to relinquish her claim. The apartment, it transpires, is a "viager," subject to an archaic French real estate agreement. Mathilde Girard, a spirited Englishwoman who resides there with her daughter Chloé, is contractually entitled to lifetime monthly payments from Mathias. This inheritance has become a complex entanglement of obligation and unexpected human connection.
