By 1961, facing legal troubles, Schäfer fled to Chile, taking many disciples with him. There, 350 kilometers from Santiago, they founded Colonia Dignidad, a settlement promising prosperity through workshops and agriculture. Instead, it devolved into a nightmare of forced labor, violence, and abuse. Following Chile's 1973 military coup, Schäfer collaborated with Manuel Contreras and Augusto Pinochet, transforming the colony into a hub of terror.
