Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Ethan Hawke) are childhood friends. Raised as siblings in the back streets of Boston, the duo start committing petty crimes from a very young age, and their crimes become more serious as they get older. Starting to find a place for themselves in the underworld, the duo work for gangster Pat Kelly (Brian Goodman). As he succeeds in the underworld and begins to disappear into the world of glory and drugs, Brian grieves over the disappointment of his beloved wife (Amanda Peet). Stuck between two different worlds, events soon force Brian to make a difficult choice.
