Trainspotting
(1996)Trainspotting 1996
Mark Renton has a group of young Scottish friends living in Edinburgh who are also addicted to heroin. They are all crushed, liars, psychopaths, thieves and drug addicts. As they harm themselves with heroin, they draw near to its inevitable end and their friendship begins to suffer. Only Mark has the will to get out of this situation. However, he is undecided about whether he chooses to live... The film has sparked controversy over whether it encourages people to use drugs in countries such as the UK, Australia and the USA. Although American Senator Bob Dole admitted that he had never seen the film before, he denounced it during the 1996 American presidential election campaigns, saying it glorified moral depravity and drug use. Despite all the controversy, the film was praised for its creativity and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay that same year. In 1999 the film ranked tenth in the UK's BFI poll and was named the fourth best British film of all time by Total Film magazine in 2004.
