On a bright sunny summer day in an affluent Connecticut suburb, Ned Merrill (Burt Lanchester), an energetic middle-aged man, appears in a swimsuit in one of his friends' yards. This is a valley of summer resorts, each with a swimming pool. This long journey that these people, who are neighbors and friends one after another, go from pool to pool, will continue until Ned crosses the whole valley and comes home. At each stage of his journey, Ned encounters an event from his past. As night falls, Ned's energy begins to wane, and he receives a colder welcome in the homes he visits. By the end of the day, summer turned into autumn.
