The Souvenir: Part II
(2021)The Souvenir: Part II 2021
British director Joanna Hogg is here with the sequel to 2019's Souvenir / A Memoir, in which she deftly chronicles an unfortunate first love. Exploring the grieving process following first love, Memoir: Part 2 tells the story of the main character, film student Julie, entering the creative process after her loss. One of the living witnesses of the story, which carries traces of Hogg's life in London in the 1980s, is Tilda Swinton, who played the role of mother in both films, and Honor Swinton Byrne, who has a daughter in real life. The director's look at his own youth 30 years later, takes from a naive place that being able to live with the ghosts of the past is a skill that must be acquired for adult life. Making its world premiere in the Director's Fortnight section at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Memoir: Episode 2 manages to renew the story it started from where it left off.
