The year is 1969 and Jack Jansen (Zac Efron) is at a turning point in his life. He was expelled from college and returned to Lutley, Florida. His father also publishes the local newspaper, The Moat County Times. When his older brother Ward, a respected contributor to The Miami Time, arrives with his colleague Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo) to investigate the case that convicted Hillary Van Vetter (John Cusack), he asks Jack to be his chauffeur. Jack, who also distributes the newspaper his father published, knows everything like the back of his hand. Charlotte Bless is also the reason Ward and Yardley investigate alligator hunter Hillary Van Vetter. Convinced that Hillary had been wrongfully convicted, this beautiful woman contacted the Miami Times and hoped they would send reporters to prove Van Vetter's innocence and save him from execution. Ward and Yardley seek career-boosting news, hoping to expose fraud and discrimination in the Florida justice system if Van Vetter is wrongfully convicted.
