Inmate Lawrence Musgrove (Puff Daddy) pays his last visit by his wife Leticia (Halle Berry) and son. The head of the death squad at the rural Georgia death row, who oversees a prisoner's preparation for execution, is between Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and his rookie son Sonny (Heath Ledger) when the prisoner asks questions during his "final march." . Sonny works and falls into a fit, a big argument ensues. The argument ends in disaster and Sonny commits suicide. With his world turned upside down, Hank quits everything and quits his job. After her husband's death, Leticia takes a job as a waitress at Hank's usual cafe, and the paths of these two dead people cross paths in a strange way. After a night of passion, Hank is shocked to learn that the man Letitia sent to die is his wife.
