Everything Must Go 2010
Based on a story by Raymond Carver, the movie opens with sales manager Nick Halsey being fired from his job for binge drinking while returning from a business trip with a young colleague. When Nick arrives at his house, he learns that his wife has left him, changed the locks and put all his belongings in the garden. With the last money in his pocket, he buys a beer and settles into his favorite chair thrown into the garden. While living in the garden of her old house, she befriends a kind but troubled pregnant neighbor and the neighbor's son whom she pays to take care of her belongings while she is away. Eventually, he decides to hold a garage sale when news comes that he will go to jail if he doesn't sell everything in the yard within a week. Staying true to the spirit of Carver's nuanced stories, the film finds solace in possibilities rather than Hollywood happy endings; It deals with extraordinary situations hidden in the details of everyday events and fleeting moments.
