Chicago Memorial Hospital Emergency Department Head Dr. Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) is a well-established injury and trauma specialist. His wife, Emily (Jo Morton), a doctor like him, dies in a car accident in the mountains while on a relief mission in Venezuela. Joe, who has been against her going to this job from the beginning, falls into a severe depression. Even though six months have passed since the incident, Emily's body has not been found. Joe's behavior worsens at the hospital due to his depression, and his manager is advised by his manager to take a break for a while and listen to his mind. Joe isolates himself from the rest of the world with memories of Emily. Among them is the dragonfly, the symbol of his wife. One night, when I was alone at home, one of the dragonfly-shaped brooches fell off the table as if someone had pushed it. Joe begins to hallucinate more and more. Some of the dying teenagers Joe met say his wife was trying to contact him. A nun investigating such events tells Jo that she and Emily may have some unfinished business and that she won't be able to get rid of her hallucinations until she completes them.
