When New York journalist Selena (Jennifer Jason Leigh) finds out that her mother, Dolores (Kathy Bates), whom she hasn't seen for years, is under arrest for a murder, she rushes to the small town where her mother lives. An old maid (Judy Parfitt) investigates the truth behind the accident in this town. Gradually, her own troubled childhood and domestic conflicts growing up begin to surface.[
