David is a young boy in 1958 and meets Meg Laughlin, who is staying at Ruth Chandler's house with her disabled sister. Ruth is a free-spirited woman who is loved by the neighborhood kids for allowing beer and smoking in her home where she lives with her sons and the Laughlin brothers, and makes the house a comfortable gathering place. But bad days are imminent for Meg and her little sister. Constantly humiliated by Ruth, the two sisters become victims of escalating domestic violence.
