During the chaos of the Second World War, young Mahito finds himself uprooted from Tokyo and placed under the care of his new stepmother, Natsuko, in the peaceful countryside. Still reeling from the loss of his mother, Mahito is unsettled by Natsuko's uncanny resemblance to her. His world is further disrupted by the mysterious arrival of a persistent gray heron, who seems to have a strange connection to Mahito, calling him the "long-awaited one." As Mahito navigates this unfamiliar environment, he must confront his grief and unravel the secrets that surround him.
