The main character of the movie, teenage Rockhopper penguin Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf), is an emerging surfer entering his first professional competition. To document this experience, he sets off with his family and his home in Buztanbul, Antarctica to Pen Gu Island to participate in the 'Big Z Surf Contest', with a camera crew following him. Along the way, Cody meets surf maniac Chicken Joe (Jon Heder), famous surf promoter Reggie Belafonte (James Woods), talent scout Mikey Abromowitz (Mario Cantone), and enthusiastic lifeguard Lani Aliikai (Zooey Deschanel). They all notice Cody's passion for surfing, which at times goes a little wrong. While Cody thinks winning will get him the admiration and respect he craves, he finds his own way when he unexpectedly comes face-to-face with a disgraced ex-surfer (Jeff Bridges) and discovers that winning doesn't always mean finishing first.
