Will Gerard (Nicolas Cage) is a dedicated English teacher. He is happily married to his wife, Laura (January Jones), a successful musician. They have a comfortable home life: band concerts, backyard barbecues, and Will's favorite hobby is playing chess matches with the principal of his school (Harold Perrineau). One night, their lives are turned upside down by a terrible event. Leaving rehearsal, Laura becomes the victim of violent sexual abuse. A well-dressed man (Guy Pearce) approaches Will, who rushes to inquire about his wife's condition at the hospital, and after this incident quietly offers to seek justice rather than embark on an emotionally draining case for the couple. . Forced to make a quick decision in a frenzy, Will accepts the offer and joins an underground organization that is illegally trying to restore order. Things are getting more and more scary and dangerous.
