The movie begins in New York's underground poker world. Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) is starting a new life as a poker master. He's studying law. Mike says this new bet is a legitimate path to success, but lacks the excitement at the gaming tables. As soon as his best friend Worm (Edward Norton) gets out of jail, he calls Mike to reunite his old poker team. One of the reasons for this is the huge gambling debt he made before he went to prison. Mike can't take it long and they duet with Worm. The Moneylender (John Malkovich) and the other players keep their eyes on Mike and Worm. Meanwhile, as he struggles to get his girlfriend Mike back on track, Mike is lured by a new fever (Famke Janssen). Will Mike be able to get out of this vortex and return to his old life?
