Mr. Brooks (Kevin Costner) is pretty normal with his wife (Marg Helgenberger) and daughter (Danielle Panabaker). This is the emotionally tormented soul of a person buried under the usual illusory appearance, but still filled with a dark secret. Mr. Brooks' confused alter ego Marshall (William Hurt) loves murder and mayhem and gets Mr. Brooks into bad business. No matter how much Mr. Brooks tries to maintain discipline and fight bad impulses, he can't resist Marshall's influence and lives a second life as a serial killer. His attacks draw the attention of Atwood (Demi Moore), a tough female detective devoted to her job and catching criminals. But Brooks' intelligence earns Atwood's respect, which eventually ignites a strange symbiotic relationship between the two.
