Michael Collins 1996

The story of Michael Collins, one of the most controversial figures of the Irish War of Independence. Eamon de Valera is the only rebel leader in Ireland in 1916 to survive the famous 6-day siege of Dublin Post Office, which Britain ruled with an iron fist for 700 years. In fact, most supporters of De Valera, an Irish-born US citizen, end up in jail. Michael Collins, who will make a name for himself in the future, gets new ideas about the rebellion when he gets out of prison. Realizing the need for a new approach to resistance, Collins formed a movement called the Irish Volunteers with collaborator Harry Boland. Following a three-pronged strategy, successfully organizing terrorist attacks, guerrilla warfare and a major spy operation, Collins will soon have the British government cornered. The result is a republican movement and Collins becomes a hero among the Irish who wanted freedom. De Valera, who does not share Collins' views on the methods leading to independence, starts a counter-struggle to increase his influence in the movement. Unfortunate enough to fall in love with his fiancée Boland's girlfriend, Collins now has to fight on multiple fronts. Events trace back to the cornered British government convinced of direct negotiations giving Ireland limited autonomy. During the negotiations, the power struggle between Collins and De Valera escalates. The two switch positions repeatedly to corner each other, and Collins accepts a completely non-violent method. According to him, the peace that will be signed under the current conditions will be an important gain on the way to full independence of Ireland in time. However, all this does not prevent the independence movement from being divided into factions within itself. Director Neil Jordan made a film without leaving the Irish issue, with little room for character development and dramatization. but it prioritizes violence and historical action. Jordan, who was criticized from time to time for dealing with the issues related to his hometown so superficially, once again did not hesitate to take on the role of cult actor Stephen Rea, taking with him stars such as Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts.
