Harry (Chris Cooper) and his teenage girlfriend Kay (Rachel McAdams) are head over heels in love with each other. However, Harry is married to Pat (Patricia Clarkson) and thinks he will be very upset about his wife's decision to divorce. Because he doesn't want to feel such pain, he decides to kill Pat. Meanwhile, Harry's best friend Richard is also in love with Kay (Pierce Brosnan).
