Laurence Anyways 2012

Still, Lawrence may well be Canadian genius Xavier Dolan's most ambitious film to date. Dolan is back with a painful love story set in Montreal. Lawrence is a professor of literature and college writer, and his girlfriend, Fred, is an artist who makes a living as an assistant director. It's clear from the first moment that this is a very real, passionate, and bizarre love story: They write poems on each other's bodies and make a list of things that will lessen their enjoyment of their relationship. Until one day Lawrence declared that he wanted to be a woman. Dolan has followed Fred and Lawrence's relationship for ten years, using striking colors and empty spaces in unconventional ways. The result was not only the translation of Dolan's style and ideas into a compelling cinematic experience, but also a sad and heartbreaking depiction of love.
