Filmmaker and naive Larry Crowne (Hanks) has been leading a super team since leaving the Marine Corps until his company shrunk. Unemployed, struggling to pay his mortgage and not knowing what to do with his days off, Larry needs the advice of friends and colleagues Lamar (Cedric the Entertainer) and B'Ella (Taraji P. Henson). He finally starts studying at a local university to start a new life... Larry joins a vibrant group of young students at East Valley Community College. Among them are the beautiful Thalia (Gugu Embata-Row) and her boyfriend Dell (Wilmer Valderrama), who are trying to build a better future for themselves. Surprisingly, he falls in love with his rhetoric teacher, Mercedes Taino (Roberts). Mercedes has largely lost interest in both teaching and her husband, Dean (Bryan Cranston). Mercedes finds the change in Larry inspiring. He also cannot deny his growing interest in this middle-aged student who is undergoing a major transformation. This ordinary man, who rightly believes his life has come to a standstill, learns something unexpected.
