The film tells the story of Leopold Soch, a sewer worker and petty thief in the Nazi-occupied Polish city of Lvov, where no one trusts anyone and the poor steal from the poor. Encountering a group of Jews, including two young children, in the sewers, Leopold agrees to hide them for a fee. What begins as a simple business deal takes an unexpected turn as they all try to avoid certain death during the 14-month period of extreme danger.
