James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes) is an ordinary soldier working as a prison warden in South Africa, where blacks in the country are constantly harassed and there is a deep state divide between the two races. The lives of James and his wife, Gloria (Diane Kruger), change one day with the news of a sudden promotion. James has been transferred to another prison and will protect Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert). Seeing blacks as the biggest threat to the country, James's ideas begin to change when he spends time with Mandela. The grassroots, who think that James sympathizes with Mandela and his family, are worried about the situation. Mandela's 30-year struggle for freedom turns into a tough journey for James and his family.
