Edge of Darkness (1943)
The story revolves around the local Norwegian doctor, Dr. Martin Stensgard, and his family. His wife, Ruth Gordon, is determined to maintain an illusion of elegant living and disregards the presence of their German occupiers. Dr. Stensgard himself is torn between staying neutral and taking a stand. His brother-in-law, the affluent owner of the town's fish cannery, chooses to collaborate with the Nazis, causing further tension within the family. Meanwhile, Dr. Stensgard's daughter, Karen, is actively involved in the resistance movement, led by the charismatic Gunnar Brogge. As for Dr. Stensgard's son, recently returned from university, he finds himself swayed by his uncle's sympathies towards the Nazis. The situation is further complicated by Captain Koenig, the rigid German commandant of the occupying garrison, whose unwavering dedication to the Reich conceals a growing fear of a potential local uprising.
