Conflict, selected as the opening film for the Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, is Egypt's official submission for the Oscars. Set during the 2013 Egyptian military coup, the film tells the story of a group of individuals from opposing sides - supporters of Mursi and the army - who are detained together in the same police van. As they are trapped in the van, they are faced with challenging conditions brought about by the conflicts, and the control of tension between the groups becomes increasingly difficult. Young director Mohamed Diab successfully takes on the challenging task of a film that takes place entirely in a confined space, and manages to avoid passing judgment on the characters, maintaining an equal distance from each one while delivering a humanistic message.
