Carl Lee Haley, the father of a ten-year-old factory worker girl, arrives at the courthouse, shoots and kills the rapists. Young lawyer Jake Tyler Brigance takes on the defense of Hayley, who has been arrested. As he and his legal assistant Ellen Roark dig deeper into their research, they come across the dark side of racism.
