Set in the mid-1960s, the film follows the deteriorating life of Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at Central American University, in a humorous way in the style of Coen films. After being dumped by his wife, Judith, Larry gets a second blow when he learns that his wife is with colleague Cy Ableman. As if that wasn't enough, his irresponsible brother Arthur moves in with him and Larry takes full responsibility of the house. Larry's problems are with his maverick son Danny and his daughter Sarah, who cares about nothing but shopping. Larry is left alone in this mess when an unidentified threatening letter, a student offering to bribe him to graduate from college, and his beautiful neighbor intervene. Feeling a genuine need for advice and assistance, Larry turns to the rabbi. Will she be able to find a reliable friend who will put an end to all her troubles and help her? Serious friend.
