Aykovski's Wife had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or. The film focuses on Alyona Mikhailova, the wife of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the most famous composer of her country, who lost her mental balance by drowning in her unhappy marriage from the very beginning. Alyona does not get the support or closeness she expects from Pyotr, whom she married passionately in love, her love turns into a destructive obsession, she endures everything and sacrifices herself just to stay close to him. “Tchaikovsky has intrigued me for a long time. To many, Tchaikovsky is a UFO, unidentified flying object, as if everybody knows about it but nobody knows about it. But this movie isn't about him, it's about Alyona, about a woman. What's more, it's an investigation into this woman's personality, temperament, and her complex, scarred and tortured life,” says director Serebrennikov.
