At the center of the movie is Chevalier de Saint-Georges, known as Joseph Bologne or Black Mozart. Born in the Caribbean, Bologna was the illegitimate son of a slave and was later educated in France. He later became a master swordsman and introduced him to French society. Through her music and opera, she rose to the top of Marie Antoinette's Parisian high society until a legal scandal revealed her true identity.
